Referee Contractor Guidelines

Responsibilities

Soccer referees are the official time keepers of the match. Upon kickoff, the referee must keep track of the time played, two minute penalties, Yellow or red card infractions, as well as, suspensions. When contracted, all referees will be given game procedures to follow while officiating at Soccer City.

Subsequent Actions

After every game, a soccer referee must submit a report of the match to the proper authority, who then publishes details of the event. Such details usually include goals, bookings, fouls and/or other infringements. Referees need to note other arbitrary incidents, such as debris thrown at players from opposing fans or inappropriate chants from the stands. A referee’s post game report may result in consequential punishments of players, teams or coaches, and is therefore crucial.

Fitness

The requirements for each category vary based on sex and rank. Men, women, assistant referees and main referees have various minimums they must meet based on the level of competition and experience.

Background

To be a soccer referee, individuals should have a firm grasp of the game and its rules and laws. FIFA, along with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has set forth the laws of the game of soccer. Considered to be a somewhat conservative society, IFAB has been implementing the rules—and allowing conservative interpretation of them. Proof of Certification is required and is not limited to the following. USSF, IHSA, US Indoor.

Regulate Games

A referee is responsible for the regulation of all elements of each particular game. He must enforce all the rules and regulations that have been set for whatever game, competition or tournament that are being officiated. A referee must also make important calls to signal any player whose actions have been in direct violation of these rules, and determine the action that must be taken in order to fairly and correctly move on with the game.

Be Informed

In order to correctly make calls and enforce a game’s rules, referees must be knowledgeable of the sports they are officiating. They must become completely familiar of all guidelines and rules enforced by the league in which they are refereeing.

Verify Time & Score

Referees are responsible for keeping up the time on the game clock, as well as verifying the score of the game. Referees must know when to stop and start time, as well as keep up with the amount of time that has passed and how much time is left in each area of play.

Be In Uniform

Referees need to be dressed appropriately and equipped with the necessary, whistles or colored cards that are necessary for the regulation of game play. Soccer City will not provide any equipment or referee attire of any kind. It is the sole responsibility of the referee contractor.

Do the Research

It is the responsibility of the referees to research and be familiar with the individual players of the games they are refereeing. This will allow the referees to anticipate any potential problems that could occur during games, giving them time to create a plan of action they can use if faced with these problems. This also allows referees to ensure that each player on the field is eligible for play.

Referee Status

All Soccer City referees are independent contractors and are not Employees of Soccer Enterprises Inc, DBA Soccer City LLC.
Soccer City does not provide insurance for officials
Referees are required to submit a copy of your referee certification, complete a independent contractor agreement and a W9 form to be contracted to officiate any games at Soccer City.
